Experience the highest navigable lake in the world - Lake Titicaca and discover the awe-inspiring journey to Machu Picchu! This 15-day adventure takes us from the vibrant capital of Lima, through the spectacular Andes and Lake Titicaca, to the historic heart of the Inca Empire in Cusco and, finally, to the legendary Machu Picchu via the spectacular 5-Day Salkantay Trek.
As a Meetup, we travel as a group, sharing incredible experiences along the way while still having plenty of free time and optional excursions to tailor your trip according to your preferences and interests.
We are taking the Salkantay Trek. This is a 5-day hike on the ancient and remote footpath located in the same region as the Inca Trail, where massive snow-capped mountains collide with lush tropical rainforests. The Salkantay Trek is considered one of the best alternative routes to Machu Picchu, offering spectacular scenery, changing ecosystems, remote villages, ancient Inca sites and far fewer people than the classic Inca Trail.
We also offer the The Train version or Machu Picchu via the short Inca Trail - intended for the non-hikers among us. Those who are interested in this option, CLICK HERE.
Our journey begins in Lima, where we'll enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Peru's capital city, followed by a free day with optional excursions. We then travel to Puno and experience the magical Lake Titicaca, including the unique Uros Floating Islands and beautiful Taquile Island.
From Puno, we'll travel to Cusco along the spectacular Route of the Sun, stopping at fascinating archaeological and cultural sites along the way. In Cusco, we'll explore the city's incredible Inca and colonial heritage and have free time to choose from several optional excursions, including Rainbow Mountain, the Sacred Valley and Maras & Moray.
Before beginning our Salkantay Trek, we’ll have several days in Cusco to acclimatize and enjoy the city and surrounding area. We then begin our 5-day adventure through some of Peru’s most spectacular landscapes.
Our trek takes us from the high Andes and the spectacular Humantay Lake to the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of our journey at approximately 15,255 feet. From there, we descend through the cloud forest and tropical jungle, passing coffee plantations and the fascinating Llactapata Ruins, before reaching Aguas Calientes. On our fifth day, we visit the legendary Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco by train.
The highlight of our journey comes on Day 5, when we visit Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As a special bonus, you can extend your adventure with one of two optional 4-day extensions! Choose the Amazon Rainforest Adventure, where we’ll explore the Tambopata National Reserve alongside expert naturalist guides, search for giant river otters at Sandoval Lake, explore the rainforest canopy, experience a nighttime caiman safari and try traditional artisanal fishing. Or continue with the Desert Express: Lima – Paracas – Ica – Nazca, a fascinating journey through Peru’s spectacular desert coast, including the Ballestas Islands, Paracas National Reserve, the Ica desert and the mysterious Nazca Lines.
